With Matthew's emphasis on the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies, this Gospel forms a natural bridge between the Old and New Testaments.  While it is directed to Jewish readers, it has never been limited in its audience.  From the visit of the Magi reported at the beginning of the gospel, to the words of the Great Commission at its conclusion, the large sphere and interests of the Messiah are clear.  Throughout Matthew's Gospel, we learn that Jesus is, indeed, the promised Messiah.
